Etna Volcanic Desert Trek Over 3000 m

This 7-kilometre hike takes you through a volcanic desert that feels closer to the Moon than to everyday landscapes. You cross recent lava fields, pass steaming vents and lateral craters, and move through wide open terrain with Mount Etna’s summit in view throughout. The route explores the highest accessible zones of the volcano, offering a full high-altitude experience.

Itinerary

8:00 am – 8:30 am: Meeting in Catania

You’ll meet the guide at the agreed location in Catania to begin the ascent to the highest accessible point on Mount Etna.

Scenic Drive Towards Etna:

We travel by comfortable minivan to the base point of the volcano. During the drive, which takes around 1.5 hours, the landscape gradually changes from small villages and orchards to wide, barren lava fields.

Cable Car and 4×4 Unimog ride to 2900 m:

The tour begins with a cable car ride from Rifugio Sapienza at 1900 metres to 2500 metres, followed by a 4×4 Unimog bus up to around 2900 metres. Transport is operated by Funivia dell’Etna.

Hiking Experience up to 3100 m:

The hike begins with a 3 km uphill trek through the volcanic desert, crossing recent lava flows and passing newly formed vents from the 2025 eruptions, some of which are still warm and steaming. From above 3000 m, you reach viewpoints at the base of the central crater area, with clear views of the summit craters and wide panoramas over eastern Sicily.

The route then continues with a 4 km downhill section, circling the Barbagallo Crater, a volcanic cone formed during the powerful flank eruption of 2002–2003. Along the way, you enter a narrow lava channel created during the same eruption and walk across varied volcanic terrain.

The hike offers open views over the Valle del Bove, a vast collapse depression formed by an ancient volcanic structure, as well as panoramic views of the Ionian coast, stretching from Syracuse to Taormina.

The route ends at the cable car station at 2500 m, followed by the return ride down to Rifugio Sapienza at 1900 m.

Relax and Return to Catania:

During the return journey to Catania, there is time to rest after the hike. Expected arrival is around 15:30.
